Best route from Long Island to Jersey?

Author: admin  /  Category: long island coastal

I live out in Suffolk County and I’m planning to drive to coastal southern New Jersey. Mapquest and my TomTom recommend taking the LIE to the Cross Island parkway to the Cross Bronx Expressway over the GWB and then onto NJ Turnpike to the Garden State Parkway. Doesn’t it make more sence though to take the Southern State to the Belt Parkway over the Verrazzano and across Staten Island to the Garden State? I’m just wondering what would be the fastest route, considering common traffic conditions. I just don’t see the point of driving north around Manhattan when my destination is south of Manhattan. Does anyone take this trip frequently? What is the best route and perhaps the best days and times to take this trip?

The Cross Bronx and the GWB are traffic nightmares (especially on Friday evenings), so yes you should definitely avoid them.

Take the Southern State to the Belt over the Verrazano. Instead of the Goethals head south towards the Outerbridge Crossing which cuts out the NJ Turnpike, and therefore its toll booths. Stay on 440 about 4 miles where you can pick up the southbound Garden State Pkwy (or simply the Parkway as it’s know in New Jersey).
