state farm refused to renew my homeowners insurance. they told me i live with 1000 feet of coastal waters. i’m on the north shore of long island, for goodness sake, it’s not the south shore. further, my house sits near the top of a summit. i called around and allstate and geico have also refused to insure our home. finally, i contacted the NY Underwriters Insurance but they don’t cover theft, i can get fire insurance through state farm as long as i have NYUI as my primary carrier but they won’t cover theft either. what can i do?
Why not let an insurance broker do the shopping for you? A broker works with several companies, and can find the best policy and terms for you. To find a broker in your area, log on to a website like http://www.homeownerswiz.com and fill out a form requesting a free quote.

The affects of all the Katrina law suits and the law suits in Florida are being felt nationwide. As a result, many companies are limiting their coastal exposure.
Would State Farm consider writing you a homeowners policy if you agreed to purchase and maintain a flood policy? The company I work for is requiring coastal home owners to purchase a flood policy. If they do not purchase a flood policy, we are not going to renew them. This is a result of the litigation. (I am not in Florida, Mississippi or Louisiana).

This is what happens when governments force insurance companies to cover losses they had no intention of covering and which were clearly excluded from coverage under the policy. Bottom line those who live near water are going to find insurance harder to come by and much more expensive. This falls under the heading nothing in life comes for free. People did get some free flood coverage where they had not purchased it, a now others such as yourself are now paying for it.

Stop calling direct writers and call an independent agent and get a quote on homeowners and flood coverage– he can makeup a comprehensive package of policies for you, to make sure you have adequate coverage. The independent agent can shop the deal to companies that underwrite properties near/on coastal waters. Allstate, Geico, State Farm, are all companies that have severely curtailed their exposure- and, they are all direct writers. In this case, the direct writers are the worst way to shop the coverage. Good luck!

we have the same problem in NC. we usually end up writing a policy on the home, a crime policy and a ind policy all seperate through different companies. contact an independent agent and see if they can help you. they have a lot more options than a single source company.

I agree with the other respondents…contact a local, independent agent online at http://www.iiaba.net and click the link for "Find An Agent."
