You can cut it with a little rubbing alcohol if you want. I usually get eaten alive when I'm mowing the lawn and I rubbed on some of this. Not one insect bothered me. In fact, a mosquito flew up and hovered by my leg for a second then flew off! Before we went, we stopped at a camping store and they recommended we check the labels for higher concentrations of DEET. I don't know if it really worked but I take vitamin supplements as well and haven't had a mosquito bite in a couple of years.
